Lasten kunnon sekä sydän- ja verisuoniterveyden ymmärtäminen (urFIT-child) on monitieteinen ja monialainen tutkimusryhmä/hanke, joka tekee yhteistyötä tunnettujen maailmanlaajuisten asiantuntijoiden kanssa  useilla mantereilla, nimittäin Oseaniassa, Pohjois-Amerikassa, Afrikassa, Euroopassa ja Aasiassa.

Tärkeimpiä tutkimustuloksia ovat valtimojäykkyys (kaulavaltimon ja reisivaltimon välinen pulssiaallon etenemisnopeus), kaulavaltimon intima-media-paksuus, kaulavaltimon elastisuus tai distensibiliteetti, vasemman kammion konsentrinen ja eksentrinen hypertrofia, vasemman kammion diastolinen toiminta, vasemman kammion täyttöpaine jne. Näitä sydämen ja verisuoniston tuloksia mitattiin sekä nuoruudessa (17-vuotiaana) että nuoressa aikuisuudessa (24-vuotiaana). Muunneltavia riskitekijöitä ovat kokonaiskolesteroli, triglyseridi, LDL-kolesteroli (pienitiheyksinen lipoproteiini), HDL-kolesteroli (suuritiheyksinen lipoproteiini), insuliiniresistenssi (glukoosi ja insuliini), verenpaine, syke, matala-asteinen tulehdus, lihavuus, kehon koostumus (rasvamassa ja lihasmassa), sedentaarisuusaika, kevyt liikunta, kohtalainen tai voimakas liikunta, tupakointi sekä hengitys- ja verenkiertoelimistön kunto. Riskitekijöitä mitattiin klinikkakäynneillä joko vuosittain tai kahdesti vuodessa alkaen 7-vuotiaasta aina 17-vuotiaaksi asti. Nuoria aikuisia arvioitiin 24-vuotiaana klinikkakäynnillä. 30-vuotiaiden klinikkakäynnit ovat juuri nyt käynnissä (2022–2024).

Tiedot ja perusjoukon koko

urFIT-child-tutkimushankkeen tiedot on hankittu Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) -tutkimuksesta, joka tunnetaan myös nimellä Children of the 90s, 90-luvun lapset. Kyseessä on maailman johtava, Yhdistyneessä Kuningaskunnassa käynnissä oleva syntymäkohorttitutkimus. Yli 14 000 raskaana olevaa naista lähti mukaan tutkimukseen huhtikuun 1991 ja joulukuun 1992 välillä, ja raskauksissa alkunsa saaneita 14 901 sikiötä sekä naisten kumppaneita on seurattu intensiivisesti yli kolmen vuosikymmenen ajan.
