The University of Eastern Finland was ranked among the world’s top universities in eight subjects in the newly released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020. The university also improved its performance in many subjects.
In Nursing, the university was ranked in the top 100 (rank range 51–100). Other subjects successful in the ranking were Agriculture & Forestry (151–200), Pharmacy & Pharmacology (201–250), Education (201–250), Medicine (251–300), Biological Sciences (301–350), Environmental Sciences (301–350) and Chemistry (451–500). In the broad subject area of Life Sciences and Medicine, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked 256th.
Compared to 2019, the university improved its performance in Pharmacy & Pharmacology, Education and Chemistry. In addition, Environmental Sciences were again ranked among the world’s leading universities, after a pause of a couple of years.
The ranking analysed more than 22 million scientific publications and nearly 200 million citations. All in all, the ranking included 1,368 universities across 48 disciplines. The indicators used in the ranking were academic reputation, employer reputation, citations and the h-index, which reflects both the number of publications and the number of citations per publication. The h-index is given a different weighting in different subjects.
