The national Week against Racism will play a prominent role in the campus cities of the University of Eastern Finland. The week will culminate in the Anti-Racism in the Everyday and Civic Action workshops and lectures in Joensuu on 21 March. The workshops and lectures are open to everyone. During the Week against Racism, the Student Union of the University of Eastern will hand out anti-racism badges and pins at its offices. Furthermore, research conducted at the University of Eastern Finland into themes of racism will be showcased on social media.
The workshops held in the morning will focus on the foundations of tackling racism, and on the related civic action. Most of the workshops will be in English. In addition to the workshops, visitors have the opportunity to experience three functional pop-up workshops as well as the Storybridges exhibition that showcases the mindset of children and adolescents with immigrant, refugee and Finnish backgrounds through their own stories.
The afternoon’s seminar (in Finnish) features a lecture by Academy Research Fellow Anna Rastas on everyday anti-racism, and a lecture by Community Mediator Miriam Attias on negotiating conflicts between different population groups.
The Anti-Racism in the Everyday and Civic Action workshops and lectures will take place in Joensuu on 21 March 2019 at 9.15–16. The morning workshops will be held in the Metria building, and the afternoon seminar and the Storybridges exhibition, the Täällä Lehtiniemen alla movie (in Finnish) and the Skills and Arts for Integration exhibition in the Futura building (Yliopistokatu 7).
