The 19th ETMU Days 'Mobile Lives, Glocal Complexities' will be organized at the University of Eastern Finland, on 24-25 November 2022.

National and international mobilities are often interrelated. Forced migration is a prime case of that, even though the internally displaced and those seeking international protection are often conceptually divided. Moreover, labour and seasonal migrants change localities according to, for example, industrial projects, company postings, care deficits, or agribusiness demand, and include both domestic and international workforces.

An ever-increasing number of people live translocal lives, being settled in two or more places, while the various crises across the globe have hastened the reappearance of national borders and many countries have restricted movement severely, thus highlighting that, at exceptional times, voluntary mobility is the privilege of the few. The crises considered include the war in Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic, and other watershed moments in national, local, or personal contexts. Questions of multiple belonging and relatedness, or exclusion and inclusion, in such translocal situations are pertinent across national borders and domestically.

Given the unstable times in which we live, attention to the interrelationship between migration studies and border studies seems more important than ever. As a collaboration between the Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration (ETMU) and the UEF’s Borders, Mobilities and Cultural Encounters Research Community (BOMOCULT), we hope that the conference will provide a constructive forum for conversations across the disciplinary boundaries of border studies, migration studies and other related fields that may otherwise operate as discrete and disconnected fields of inquiry. Mobile Lives, Glocal Complexities - 19th ETMU Days hope to advance multidisciplinary perspectives across such fields as the humanities and the social sciences, but also across the borders of arts, civic action, and science.
