Jannat Rahman shares her experience of applying to the Master’s Degree Programme in Pedagogy and Teaching for Sustainability. According to Jannat, the best thing about Finland is its supportive system designed for student welfare.
Why did you decide to apply to UEF?
I was primarily looking for a fully-funded scholarship program in Education and Sustainability, and when I found out about the program I am currently enrolled in, it seemed like a perfect fit. Unlike other scholarship programs, applying for master's and Finland scholarships was relatively easy, which motivated me even more to apply. I also wanted to blend my education, career, and my activism in one field, which is education and sustainability; so I did not think twice before submitting my application.
In your opinion, what is the best thing about Finland and Joensuu?
The best thing about Finland is its supportive system designed for student welfare. In Joensuu, I want to mention the activities that are held for students for their mental, physical, and emotional well-being are great, considering the dark and long winters. I would also like to mention nature; to me, who was born and raised in a mega-city her entire life, I had the opportunity for the first time in my life to connect with nature, and that has changed me for the better. The whole environment is peaceful, calming, and perfect to reflect on yourself and on life in general
The love, care, generosity, kindness, and genuine empathy I have received all sum up to one greatest memorable moment of my life here, in Finland.

What has been your favorite thing in your studies so far?
Finland and UEF have blessed me with so many memorable moments that it's hard to choose. But as a South Asian woman who has to take care of herself financially, for me, the best memorable moments (I cannot choose one) were when I got my Finland scholarship money and when I got help and proper treatment for my depression. When it comes to choosing one, I have to say that meeting people in different contexts here is my greatest achievement. The love, care, generosity, kindness, and genuine empathy I have received all sum up to one greatest memorable moment of my life here, in Finland.
What would you say to a prospective student, who is thinking about applying to UEF?
I would want to say to a prospective student to consider Finland and Joensuu for the things they have to offer. But at the same time, it is important to remember that everywhere in life, there are some struggles. I would ask them not to think in a way that if they come here, all their problems will be sorted. Rather, see this as an opportunity to flourish as a human being in every possible way.
What are your plans after graduation?
I am currently working on two Erasmus+ projects as a research assistant and as a Student Ambassador. I want to have a career in Academia, and UEF and Finland have provided me the opportunity to create my own network and experience work life in Finnish contexts. Upon completing my master's, I would pursue a Ph.D. in my related field and would love to start teaching and keep working as a researcher.
Anything else you would like to say?
People who come from foreign countries, especially from South Asia (because I am from that part), I would like to see them putting an effort to not just survive but also thrive by taking steps toward cultural and social integration, language learning, etc. I know it seems alienating because of the cultural difference, but with genuine intention and effort, life here does not feel as isolating as many people experience.
