The University of Eastern Finland’s doctoral conferment ceremony at the Kuopio Campus is postponed to 9–11 June 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Originally, the ceremony was scheduled for June 2020, but due to the pandemic, it has been moved forward on a couple of occasions already. The decision to postpone the ceremony was made by the university’s Leadership Group.
According to Professor Katri Vehviläinen-Julkunen, Chair of the Conferment Organising Committee, safety comes first, but the university also wants to hold on to academic traditions. This is why the ceremony has now been postponed all the way until 2022, so that all the festivities, from the hat fitting ceremony to the ceremonial conferment of the degrees, and from the banquet to the ball, can be organised properly, without having to resort to special arrangements to reduce the risk of infections.
More than 150 doctoral graduates had registered for the 2020 ceremony. Their participation in the 2022 ceremony will be prioritised, should there be any need to limit the number of participants. Under normal circumstances, doctoral conferment ceremonies are organised on the Kuopio Campus every five years. Since the previous ceremony on the Kuopio Campus was held in 2015, there will now be seven years between the ceremonies.
Registration for the doctoral conferment ceremony to be held on the Kuopio Campus in June 2022 will be opened in late 2021. The ceremony programme and other details will be updated on the conferment ceremony website at www.uef.fi/promootio.
