Doctoral defence of Mariam Maku Quarshie, MSc, 21.10.2026: Diamond platforms for fluorescent and quantum sensing: Fabrication and characterization

The doctoral dissertation in the field of Photonics will be examined at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, Joensuu campus.

What is the topic of your doctoral research? Why is it important to study the topic?

The work focuses on fabrication and characterization of diamond-based platforms. Fabrication and characterization are important because they allow us to create materials with specific properties and understand how well those materials perform for their intended applications.

What are the key findings or observations of your doctoral research?

The key findings are that diamond growth can be spatially controlled for device fabrication using SiO2, TiO2, Cr. Controlled surface graphitization can produce diamond-graphitic carbon core-shell needles while preserving detectable SiV⁻ fluorescence. Geometry of a highly conductive particle governs how absorbed optical energy is redistributed into surrounding tissue, with elongated particles exhibiting enhanced heat release near their tips. Controlled thermal oxidation provides a practical route to sharpening diamond needles and obtaining tips containing single NV colour centres capable of single-photon emission.

How can the results of your doctoral research be utilised in practice?

The results of the research provide a foundation for further development of diamond photonic devices, biocompatible carbon-based fluorophores, and diamond probes for advanced sensing applications.

What are the key research methods and materials used in your doctoral research?

The doctoral research combined experimental fabrication, material characterization, data analysis, and scientific publication.
