EU project coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland expands – aiming for more personalised cardiovascular disease risk assessment

The University of Aveiro has joined the MIRACLE research project coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland. The project develops more accurate and personalised methods for cardiovascular disease risk assessment, prevention, and treatment by harnessing multidisciplinary expertise and advanced data analytics.

The MIRACLE project is led by Professor Minna Kaikkonen-Määttä from the A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences. The project brings together several top European universities and research institutes, combining expertise in medicine, biosciences, omics technologies, and data analytics. The four-year project began in autumn 2023 with the support of the European Innovation Council (EIC). The University of Aveiro joined as a new partner thanks to funding from the European Commission’s Hop-on Facility.

Professor Rosario Domingues’s research group at the University of Aveiro contributes strong expertise in the identification of new biomarkers, particularly through metabolomics methods, and participates in advancing the development of novel risk assessment approaches.

The Hop-on Facility is part of the Horizon Europe framework programme and is designed to support the inclusion of new partners in ongoing research projects. The funding promotes European research collaboration and the sharing of expertise across countries and organizational boundaries.

EIC funding supports high-level research and innovation activities with the potential for major scientific and societal breakthroughs.

“MIRACLE is an example of how European collaboration and diverse funding opportunities can together accelerate research that aims at better public health and more personalised care,” says Kaikkonen-Määttä.
