Securing funding is an essential skill for a researcher, no matter their field of study or position. For this reason we organized a Proposal Development workshop for PhD students with an experienced grant writer and reviewer – Vanessa Fuller.
The workshop took place on 28 August 2025, at the Joensuu campus. It was organized with support from the BoMoCult Research community.
During the workshop, the participants learned how reviewers work, and what they consider a strong application. Fuller highlighted what type of information and evidence should be included to create a convincing case. Often small tweaks go a long way when it comes to securing extra points. In a competitive business of external funding – every point counts.
Additionally, the participants learned about preparing visuals to support the narrative. Fuller also discussed the academic CV, and how it completes the project application. The workshop was a unique opportunity for early career researchers to peak into a reviewers’ mind and shift focus from presenting an idea to demonstrating value.
