Coordinated by the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Eastern Finland, the PRESAFE project, short for Safety, Sustainability and Accessibility in Remote Nurse Prescribing across NPA Regions, has been selected for funding in the 2026 call of the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) Programme. With this selection, the University of Eastern Finland will, for the first time, serve as the lead partner of a project in the NPA Programme.
The PRESAFE project will develop, test and implement a remote appointment model for nurse prescribers. The aim is to identify high-quality and safe solutions to improve access to healthcare services in sparsely populated Northern Periphery and Arctic regions.
The project partners are the Wellbeing Services County of North Savo, the University of Limerick in Ireland and the University of Akureyri in Iceland. The total funding awarded amounts to just over one million euros, of which the University of Eastern Finland’s share is approximately 390,000 euros. The project manager is Postdoctoral Researcher Saija Koskiniemi, and the other Finnish members of the project team are Professor Marja Härkänen, University Lecturer Krista Jokiniemi and Doctoral Researchers Laura Hako and Maija Männistö. The project will start in September 2026.
In June 2026, the Monitoring Committee of the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme approved a total of 15 development projects for funding.
