In the beginning of June, the Karelian Institute hosted members of the RUSTIK Project for a meeting and a field trip. The meeting agenda revolved around rural proofing, policy impact, living lab evaluations and more. The team also visited Juuka - a town struggling with aging population and depopulation. During the field trip, they learned about the Puu-Juuka revitalization project that aims at attracting tourists to the area. The trip was completed with a visit to the inspiring Koli National Park.

RUSTIK is a four-year transdisciplinary research project aiming to enable rural communities’ actors and policy makers to design better strategies, initiatives and policies fostering sustainability transitions of rural areas. The center peace of the project are 14 living labs in 10 European countries - one of them is North Karelia. The North Karelian Living Lab identifies immigrant retention as its focal challenge.
