Professor Tarja Malm receives an ERC Proof of Concept Grant for research into Alzheimer’s disease

Professor Tarja Malm of A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland has received an ERC Proof of Concept Grant, issued by the European Research Council, ERC, for the WAVEAD project focusing on the development of novel methods for measuring the electrical activity of the brain.

The ERC Proof of Concept Grant is worth 150,000 euros and is designed to help ERC grantees to bridge the gap between the results of their pioneering research and the early phases of its commercialisation or societal application.

The WAVEAD project seeks to develop novel signal analysis methods to analyse waveforms measured using transcranial magnetic stimulations and to evaluate whether these signals could be used to predict the patient disease-related pathologies in the brain.

The ERC Proof of Concept Grants announced by the European Research Council today, involving 150 projects, amount to a total of 22.5 million euros in funding. Only two ERC Proof of Concept Grants were awarded to Finnish researchers in this initial round of the 2025 competition.
