Paula Carballo studied Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development at the Open university of UEF and now continues towards degree studies in a Bachelor’s Programme.
"I have always been interested in a wide range of things, and it's been challenging to decide which direction to take in my career. The studies in Lifelong learning and sustainable development at the open university opened up a world of opportunities for me," Paula Carballo shares.
With a background in graphic design, Carballo has worked in tourism for the past few years and has been living in Finland for three years.
"I wanted to continue my studies and had always wanted to attend university. I heard about the concept of the open university from my Finnish friends, and I thought that was an excellent opportunity for me to return to studying after a long time."
As Carballo browsed through the open university study selection, the English-taught study module Basic Studies in Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development caught her attention. This module, including topics such as the globalization of education, features of the Finnish education system, and promoting sustainable development through adult education, complemented Carballo’s interests in history and different cultures, and she was excited to get to know more.
"I started at the open university by completing one course and continued when the contents turned out to be very interesting. While topics like multiculturalism and globalization were more familiar to me, I felt that lifelong learning and sustainable development were less visible in everyday life. However, I came to realize that these themes are much more focused on the future," Carballo notes.
Studying at a university has always been an important goal for me, although the idea seemed somewhat challenging. Completing courses through the open university gave me the confidence that I can succeed in this.

The opportunity to study online has been essential for Carballo’s progress in her studies.
"When I was working full-time, I found online studying at the open university really flexible. I could study in the morning and work in the evening. Now, I’m completing my degree studies as much online as possible, and I’m aiming for an internship next year."
