The University of Eastern Finland has strengthened its position in three academic subjects in the 2021 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, conducted by Shanghai Ranking. The University of Eastern Finland’s research in atmospheric science, pharmacy, and tourism was ranked in the top 76–100 worldwide.
As many as 19 academic subjects of the University of Eastern Finland were ranked among the world’s leading 400 universities.
“Systematic and strategic support for research, and strong development of our interdisciplinary research communities, have significantly strengthened the university’s international performance in various subjects. This creates a foundation for our competitiveness and attractiveness also in the future,” Rector Jukka Mönkkönen says.
In addition to atmospheric science, pharmacy and tourism, also biological sciences, dentistry, nursing science, law, and medical technology performed the strongest in the ranking. The University of Eastern Finland was ranked in the top 300 also in geography, biomedicine, public health, education, medicine, forest sciences, and environmental science.
In a national comparison, the University of Eastern Finland’s research in law and tourism were ranked the best in Finland.
“Our leading national position in law and tourism research is the result of our determined development efforts. Our researchers in both of these fields have created strong interdisciplinary networks within the university, and they have also invested in international collaboration,” Academic Rector Tapio Määttä says.
Shanghai Ranking’s latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects was published on 26 May. The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is based, e.g., on research output, research quality, research influence, international collaboration, and academic awards.
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has been conducted since 2009. The 2021 ranking included a total of 54 academic subjects, with 4,000 universities from 93 countries participating.
