University of Eastern Finland climbs in THE Impact Ranking

The University of Eastern Finland took a major leap forward in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking 2023, which is an international sustainability ranking. The university was ranked in the top 50 in the SDGs related to Responsible Consumption and Production and Climate Action. More than 1,700 higher education institutions took part in the ranking.

In the SDGs related to Climate Action and Responsible Consumption and Production, the university was ranked 22nd and 48th, respectively, constituting a significant improvement from 2022. The rank in Climate Action was the highest out of Finnish universities.

“Last year, we were ranked 77th for Climate Action, and in the rank range 201-300 for Responsible Consumption and Production. I’m glad to see that we’ve managed to highlight our sustainability expertise in these areas better than before.  As competition in these sustainability rankings is getting tougher every year, it’s a major achievement to do as well as we’ve now done,” says Director of Administration Tuomo Meriläinen, delighted.

The THE Impact Ranking is an international ranking assessing how successful higher education institutions are in promoting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. There are a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and each higher education institution is scored on the basis of four SDGs. In addition to the SDG Partnership for the Goals, three best-ranked SDGs are taken into account. Overall, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked in the 301-400 range.

In the overall ranking, University of Eastern Finland ranked in a shared third place among Finnish universities together with University of Jyväskylä. LUT University was the best out of Finnish universities while University of Helsinki ranked second best.
