University of Eastern Finland improves its performance in ARWU ranking 2026

The University of Eastern Finland climbed to the top 600 universities in the world in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The University of Eastern Finland improved its performance in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026. The university was ranked in the 501–600 range, moving up from its previous placement in the 601–700 range.

“The University of Eastern Finland has carried out long-term work to improve the conditions for research. We have focused on world-class international research and strong networks,” says Vice Rector Jussi Pihlajamäki.

The ARWU ranking, also known as the Shanghai Ranking, assesses the world’s top 1,000 universities. In the 2026 ranking, the University of Helsinki was rated the best university in Finland, placing in the 101–150 range.

ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index in the Web of Science, and per capita performance of a university. More than 2500 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.
