A total of 135 Ukrainian students applied for a separate non-degree right to study at the University of Eastern Finland in a call open this March. The university is also offering Open University courses to citizens of Ukraine free of charge.
In response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, the University of Eastern Finland this March offered Ukrainian degree students an opportunity to apply for admission under a separate non-degree right to study. The university also made grants available to Ukrainian students. A total of 135 applications were received, and the university is now offering admission to 42 Ukrainian students. Ten of them will also be awarded a grant to cover their costs of travel and living.
“This separate non-degree right to study is the fastest and most flexible way to make it possible for those fleeing Ukraine to continue their university studies in Finland. The number of applications we received shows that we are meeting a real need. We are preparing to open rolling admissions in April,” Academic Rector Tapio Määttä says.
The University of Eastern Finland is also making its Open University courses available to Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war, free of charge.
“We are actively increasing the number of Open University courses offered in English to meet a demand that has been increasing also otherwise,” says Tero Karjalainen, Director of the Centre for Continuous Learning.
The call for applications for a separate non-degree right to study was aimed at students who have an existing, valid right to study at a Ukrainian university and Ukrainian citizenship, and whose studies have been discontinued due to the war. Study rights were granted based on applicants’ academic performance and the compatibility of their earlier studies with those offered by the University of Eastern Finland.
Ukrainian students who have been granted a separate study right will, later on, have the opportunity to apply for admission to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of the University of Eastern Finland, provided that they meet the eligibility and admissions criteria.
Separate non-degree rights to study were granted to Ukrainian students by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies (26), the Philosophical Faculty (8), the Faculty of Science and Forestry (6), and the Faculty of Health Sciences (2). The separate non-degree rights to study granted to Ukrainian students are valid until 31 July 2024. Studies will be offered on the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses of the University of Eastern Finland.
The university has allocated 100,000 euros to the grants offered to Ukrainian students. Ten students completing their studies on the university’s campuses will be awarded a grant, which will be paid up until the end of July 2023.
