Contents: Reading and writing assignments on the use of legal, academic and professional English, spoken individual and group assignments and discussions. Appropriate reading strategies, the structure of scientific articles in English, cues indicating relationships between concepts, general scientific and field-specific vocabulary.
Learning outcomes: Student is able to
- use English texts efficiently for learning and following the latest developments in their field
- select the appropriate reading strategies
- use critical thinking and skills necessary for source criticism
- use vocabulary typical of academic English and terminology specific to their field
- present summaries of reading material
- write texts that follow the conventions of English on topics related to their field
- perform in the relevant spoken language situations, while taking account of the demands of cross-cultural communication
- work independently and with others, self-evaluate, and develop their learning by giving and receiving feedback.
Open University students: the course is especially recommended if you are studying law for a degree.
Study methods: Online teaching. Open University students must reserve 108 hours of studying for the course. Active participation in teaching and the course includes assignments and exercises. Studying takes place online. An introductory meeting is mandatory (19.3.). Adequate technical equipment (e.g., a sufficiently fast network connection, headphones, microphone, and webcam) and the ability to use the required technology are required for online participation. Open University students must reserve 108 hours of studying for the course.
Schedule: 18.3.–29.5.2026. Mandatory meeting (online) on Wednesday, 18.3., at 14-16. Other meetings 25.3., 1.4. and 6.5.
Grading scale: Pass/Fail
