The main focus of this course is to familiarize you with the most common electrochemical testing methods for battery cells and the interpretation of the resulting data. These methods include:
- Galvanostatic charge–discharge testing
- Rate capability and cycling performance
- Differential capacity analysis
- Cyclic voltammetry
- Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
- Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique (GITT) and
- Potentiostatic Intermittent Titration Technique (PITT)
The first two methods focus on practical battery performance, while differential capacity analysis and the subsequent electrochemical methods provide insights into the electrochemical behaviour, reactions, kinetics, and transport processes occurring within the cell during charging and discharging.
The learning outcome is that you will gain a strong theoretical knowledge of the most commonly used electrochemical testing methods for batteries and the interpretation of the resulting data.
This course is the third of the three courses of the e-Battery Lab module, after An introduction to battery technology and industry (1 ECTS) and How batteries are made (1 ECTS). Thanks to funding from Secle (Jotpa), these courses are free of charge.
An online course on your own schedule during the spring of 2027. You can study the course in English or, for extra challenge, in Finnish. The course opens in the March or April of 2027, but you can register for it now.
Total 81 h, including lectures (5 h), quizzes (5 h), self-study (29 h), preparation of the testing procedure (10 h), virtual battery testing software (12 h), and report preparation (20 h). Knowledge of the different methods is assessed through separate quizzes for each method, followed by a comprehensive assignment at the end of the course.
This course is free of charge in the spring of 2027, and will be available as an open university course from the fall of 2027.
This course is targeted at English- ja Finnish-speaking people who work with battery technology, are interested in moving to the field of battery technology and industry, or are in need of training.
Thanks to Secle funding, this course is free of charge for the spring of 2027.
The lectures may be spoken in one language, but they will have subtitles in both.
