Battery cell production consists of several stages, which vary depending on whether coin or pouch cells are manufactured. While the basic principles are similar, the practical implementation and equipment differ. In this course, you are introduced to battery cell manufacturing through animations based on real laboratory equipment and processes. The course covers the nine main production stages: electrode material preparation and slurry mixing, electrode coating, drying, calendering, cutting and preparation, cell assembly, electrolyte filling, cell sealing, and formation. The processes and equipment presented are representative of those widely used in industrial battery manufacturing.
The learning outcome is that you understand the complete process of manufacturing button and pouch cells at the laboratory scale, from electrode preparation to cell formation.
This course is the second of the three courses of the e-Battery Lab module, after An introduction to battery technology and industry (1 ECTS), and followed by Electrochemical testing of batteries (3 ECTS). Thanks to funding from Secle (Jotpa), these courses are free of charge.
An online course on your own schedule during the spring of 2027. You can study the course in English or, for extra challenge, in Finnish. The course opens in February 2027, but you can register for the course now.
Total 27 h, including lectures (4 h), quizzes (5 h), self-study (5 h), and virtual lab work (1 h) and a report (12 h).
This course is free of charge in the spring of 2027, and will be available as an open university course from the fall of 2027.
This course is targeted at English- ja Finnish-speaking people who work with battery technology, are interested in moving to the field of battery technology and industry, or are in need of training.
Thanks to Secle funding, this course is free of charge for the spring of 2027.
The lectures may be spoken in one language, but they will have subtitles in both.
