Learning outcomes: After completing the course student will be able to:
- define what Nature-Based Solutions are and what criteria they must meet.
- recognize the significance of Nature-Based Solutions in addressing various (societal) problems.
- identify examples of Nature-Based Solutions implemented in Finland and around the globe.
- apply their knowledge to envision what Nature-Based Solutions could look like in their own local environment.
The study unit develops the following generic skills/generic competences: digitalization, ethics, internationality, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication.
Content: The course consists of instruction section, four study modules and feedback section. The contents of the studies in the course:
- Introduction and basics of Nature-Based Solutions
- Environmental risks mitigation with Nature-Based Solutions
- Food production and water management
- Urban and Local development with Nature-Based Solutions.
In the course, the content is examined from a multidisciplinary perspective, utilizing viewpoints from biology, forestry, social sciences, and engineering. Study modules contain videos, reading materials and exercises. Exercises include quizzes to test knowledge, information search tasks and writing tasks. All the course materials are available without passing the quizzes, but completion of the course requires passing the quizzes and doing other exercises.
Learning material: Online material, which includes videos, reading materials and different kinds of exercises.
Prerequisites: No previous knowledge is required.
Target group: For those interested in nature-based solutions, biodiversity, biology, environmental sciences, and related topics. Suitable for professionals working in research and expert roles in the field, whether in organizations, companies, or various types of associations.
Modes of study: Independent online studying 54 hours. Studying consists of videos, reading materials and exercises. Passing the course requires that all exercises are completed successfully.
