Course contents:
- Differences between standard language and everyday registers; style and tone differences
- Structures typical of written style (e.g., participles and participial constructions)
- Cohesive text and mastery of some standardized text types (e.g., invitation, announcement)
- Problem situations, weighing solution options, and proposing actions
- Maintaining interactive conversation, justifying views, making suggestions, and declining
- Current events in Finland and relating them to broader contexts and previous knowledge of Finnish society, culture, and history
Learning outcomes:
The student is encouraged to read even relatively extensive texts when necessary, despite the presence of unfamiliar words. They recognize differences in language registers and styles and can utilize them in their own productions. They can write cohesive text compositions of specified length and are able to maintain a conversation, presenting justified views and solution proposals. The learner follows general and current events in Finland and their own field in Finnish, relating them not only to broader contexts but also to their previous knowledge of Finland.
The objective is to attain the level B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
Study methods: Active participation to distance teaching (80%). The course contains, for example, lectures, spoken and written pair and group exercises, peer feedback and independent study. The course requires a total of 108 hours of work.
Please note that the successful completion of the course and participating in a possible exam requires active participation and the completion of course assignments within the specified schedule.
Schedule: The course will be organized from September 8 to December 8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 14-16 (Exceptions: no lessons on Oct 8, 13 and 15). It is important to attend the first lesson on September 8 where practical information about the course will be covered.
Prerequisites: a B1.1 level in Finnish.
