Learning outcomes:
After completing the study unit, the student will be able to:
- understand the key concepts of epidemiology
- recognize epidemiology as a key tool in public health
- explain and interpret epidemiological research and findings
Study methods
The study unit modes of study are contact teaching (20h), tasks and group works (10h), independent study (15h). Students who are unable to participate in contact teaching can alternatively write an instructed learning diary type essay (20h) instead. To pass the course the student needs to participate in contact teaching (>50% attendance rate) or write the essay, and participate in tasks and groupworks (>50%), and take an online exam (>50%). An acceptable essay is written in good language and covers the topics. Essay may be rewritten once. More details at course eLearn.

Recommended readings are: Rothman, K. "Epidemiology, an introduction". Oxford, any edition, and Bhopal, R. “Concepts of Epidemiology”, Oxford, any edition.
Evaluation criteria: 0-5. Performance for grading 0 (fail) to 5 (excellent) is assessed by the exam. Exam may be retaken once. Grading is based on exam score, 10% per grade from 50%.
