This course is a part of the Basic Studies in Social Sciences.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students are familiar with sociology as a discipline and as a way to see society. Trough learning different sociological theories, they are able to understand the meaning of structure and agency and their influence on social change, and to also reflect everyday life through sociological lenses.
This course develops the following generic competences: critical thinking, interaction and communication
Content
The course provides insight on sociology as discipline: its historical development, main research problems and topical fields. The course introduces basic concepts, classics, and theoretical approaches to understand social phenomena at different levels of social life. Sociological research that shows how social relations shapes social relations and individuals’ understanding on themselves and each other is also introduced.
Modes of study
The course is a self-study online course in the Moodle learning environment. Online course include lecture recordings and/or written materials. Based on the literature, various written assignments are given.
Schedule
The course is open from 1.9.2025-30.4.2026, and you can study at your own pace by accessing the course from anywhere using your own device.
Open University registration is open 7.8.2025-5.4.2026 at Opintopolku and UEF website.
