This course is part of the YUFE Skills of the Future Programme.
Contents: The course offers a substantial knowledge package on the concepts of sustainable development and sustainability and their ecological, social, economic and cultural dimensions, as well as the connections and tensions between the dimensions. The ethical viewpoint through the course provides a foundation for examining sustainability also as a political and normative concept. The course also emphasises the importance of agency and the different roles of an individual. A student gets the opportunity to examine the sustainability of their lifestyle from the perspective of their individual choices, but on the other hand, sustainability and climate challenges are also presented as structural and systemic problems. There are plenty of practical examples and cases that illustrate sustainability challenges and how to solve them. Student plans and performs assignment to study chosen theme from different perspectives of sustainability and reports the results in an essay.
Learning outcomes: After the course, the student:
- can explain what sustainable development is as a political and normative concept.
- recognises ecological, social, economic and cultural dimensions of sustainability and the connections and conflicts related to them.
- can explain why sustainability, and the wicked problems related to it, require multidisciplinary cooperation and problem-solving skills.
- can explain the significance of individual agency and global responsibility as well as the need for comprehensive transformation.
The course developes generic learning outcomes as digitalization, management and development, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication.
Modes of study: Independent online studying, multiple-choice questions, learning assignments (81 h) and phenomenon-based learning assignment and essay (54 h). Evaluation criteria: Multiple-choice questions, learning assignments, summary, essay. The grade will be given based on the essay.
Teaching methods: Online course on the DigiCampus platform.

The course is available online between Aug 1st, 2025 and July 31st, 2026. Learning assignments can be completed independently throughout the year. Course evaluation is done four times a year. Tasks need to be returned by one of these dates: 15.11., 28.2., 15.5. or 31.7.
