The studies in Ukrainian Language and Culture consist of three language courses and three culture and history courses. The courses focusing on culture and history are available in English. The basic studies in Ukrainian language and culture comprise 30 ECTS credit points including 15 ECTS credits of language studies which are taught in Finnish.
The English-language studies in Ukrainian culture include three courses on culture and history. Students may complete individual courses or the full 15 ECTS credits of culture and history studies.
Culture and History Courses
In the culture and history courses, students explore everyday life and culture in Ukraine, its economic structure, education system, geography, and history. The language of instruction is English. The courses can be completed in any order. Teaching is provided in a blended format (on the Joensuu campus and online).

The fee for each course is €20 per ECTS credit.
Applying for Culture and History Courses
There are 9 study places available for students through a paid separate study right for the culture and history courses. Students are selected in the order of registration. Applications are submitted for individual courses.
The following courses are available during the academic year 2025–2026:
- Autumn Semester 2025: Discovering Ukraine All Around, 5 ECTS credits
Application period: August 1–16, 2025 - Spring Semester 2026: Ukrainian History and Culture, 5 ECTS credits
Application period: November 1–16, 2025
Applications are submitted via a Webropol form.
The course ‘Independent Ukraine’, included in the culture and history studies, will be offered for the first time in the academic year 2026–2027. The registration period is in August 2026.
The Ukrainian language and culture studies are coordinated by the School of Humanities.
