The Master’s Degree Programme in Faith, Crises and Existential Wellbeing (FACE) is offered by the School of Theology and is part of the newly established subject area, Theology of Wellbeing. The programme is taught entirely in English. It addresses contemporary challenges faced by individuals and societies, focusing on the intersections of people’s meaning systems—such as religious ones—and their connections with existential wellbeing, and individual and collective crises.
The programme aims to educate experts with deep understanding in how individuals and societies cope in times of personal or collective crisis, such as serious illness or global pandemics. The focus centers on the role of their fundamental beliefs, whether religious, spiritual, or other. The curriculum is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on connections among theological disciplines, the humanities, and the social sciences.
The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practice. Graduates will be well-prepared for both professional roles and doctoral studies that demand theological expertise. Work-based learning is integrated into the programme to enhance real-world readiness. Students will develop practical skills relevant to working life, including generalist sectors, preparing them for roles that require theological insight—whether in research, NGOs, faith-based organisations, or other professional contexts.

Studies
An academic theological degree prepares theologians for the service of societies, universities, and religious organizations. Master’s-level studies in the field of Theology of Wellbeing focus on the intersections of religion and other meaning systems, existential wellbeing, and both individual and collective crises. The programme emphasizes working life skills, preparing the student for duties that require theological expertise, for example, in NGO activities, or in research. The applied studies in pastoral care and counselling provide students with specialized skills to work in roles that require pastoral care expertise. Finnish-speaking students may also complete the Applied studies for a post at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The student writes a master’s thesis in this discipline. During the thesis process, the student develops personal competencies to reach the sufficient level of knowledge to be able to pursue possible postgraduate studies.
