The infrastructure for materials research and photonics comprehensively connects the equipment of the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology used in materials research on the campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio into a single stock of research equipment. The research infrastructure is at the core of photonics, 3D printing, spectral colour research, materials chemistry and technology, biomaterials research including biorefining, manufacturing of nanostructures and functional materials, and nanomaterials research.
The use of this multidisciplinary infrastructure is closely linked to research communities in natural and health sciences and the related interfaces. The infrastructure is part of a wide network of universities, sectoral research institutes and businesses in Finland and other countries.
The infrastructure for materials research and photonics provides technology services in areas such as cleanroom operations including electron beam lithography for manufacturing micro- and nanostructures, experimental and computational studies of the chemical and physical properties of materials, biorefining, spectral measurement and imaging, pilot-scale synthesis of nanomaterials, and the extensive measurement of the functionalities of photonics components.
