Pasi Tuunainen, the University of Eastern Finland’s new Professor of Modern History, points out that although technology and surveillance capabilities relating to the northern regions have evolved over the decades, geography still matters in warfare.

For the first time in its history, the university surpassed the milestone of more than 200 doctoral degrees awarded.

Fiia Söderholm, Lejish Vettikkat Parameswaran, Milla Rosenlund and Eloi Schmauch received the Doctoral Researcher Awards. Professor Anne-Mari Souto was recognised with the Doctoral Supervisor Award.

The new unit will provide expert services to support the university’s research and strategic leadership.

Applications were received evenly across all of the university’s programmes. The majority of applicants, over 90 per cent, came from outside Europe.

The study examines the underexplored adaptive and resilience-building roles of artisanal and small-scale mining.
