Why did you decide to apply to UEF?
I chose to apply to the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) because it offers the finest environmental science courses in Finland. With my academic background aligning seamlessly with the Environmental Health and Technology (ENHET) programme. I found the ideal match for my educational goals. Moreover, I have a strong interest in the environmental health perspective, and UEF's ENHET in Kuopio programme has extensive collaborations with Kuopio University Hospital, providing an exceptional opportunity to gain practical experience and insights in this field.
What has been your favorite thing in your studies so far?
My favorite aspect of my studies so far has been the practical and lab courses I've attended over the last year. The hands-on experience and the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting have been incredibly valuable. What makes this experience even better is the approachability and friendliness of the teachers at my university. They go the extra mile to ensure that students feel comfortable and understand the material both inside and outside the classroom. Additionally, I've found that the academic environment here is not overly stressful, which has allowed me to balance my studies effectively.
What has been the best or the most memorable moment in Finland or at UEF so far?
A: The most memorable moment during my time in Finland and at UEF was my initial arrival at Helsinki Airport. It was the first time I realized that you could confidently drink tap water as your drinking source. This simple yet significant realization highlighted the country's commitment to environmental sustainability. Later, I relate this to the "Water Treatment Practicals" course. This course included a visit to the Vesi-Kuopio water treatment plant, where I had the opportunity to witness the remarkable process of converting lake water into safe drinking water. As a part of a group project, we also had the chance to simulate this process in the UEF water lab. This hands-on experience was not only fascinating but also educational, emphasizing the top-notch quality of drinking water in Finland, known to be among the best in the world.

In your opinion, what is the best thing about Finland and Kuopio?
The best thing about Finland, in my opinion, is its remarkable commitment to caring for the environment. The country's dedication to sustainability and the natural beauty that surrounds you is truly impressive. Finland's serene and tranquil atmosphere is another standout feature, making it an excellent place to live and study. Additionally, I've noticed that the quality of customer services in Finland is exceptionally high when compared to other parts of the world I come from. Moreover, I genuinely appreciate the local bus transport system in Kuopio. It's not only convenient but also reliable, making it easier to get around and explore the city.
What would you say to a prospective student thinking about applying to UEF?
I would strongly encourage prospective students to consider applying to UEF. The university offers affordable tuition fees with opportunities for significant tuition waivers and scholarships, such as the Finland Scholarship. The Finland scholarship really helped me to focus only on my studies as an international student. Additionally, Kuopio, the city where UEF is located, is known for being cost-effective.
Personally, I highly recommend UEF to my friends and fellow students, and it's worth noting that several students from my university in Bangladesh have already begun their studies at UEF this year. As it is always a step more difficult as a girl to pursue higher studies from developing countries like Bangladesh. I started my studies in my thirties and there is so much misinformation regarding age for higher studies in our culture. I want to ensure them that one can restart at any stage of their life if they are motivated enough.
What are your plans after graduation?
I have just started my thesis with the Fine Particles and Aerosols Technology research group. Looking ahead, my aspiration is to pursue further research within this group for my PhD studies.
