Finland and Namibia are strengthening their academic partnership as both countries seek to expand collaboration in education, research, innovation and skills development.
This commitment was highlighted during a series of engagements in Windhoek involving Namibian institutions and the University of Eastern Finland, Tampere University, the University of Oulu and the University of Turku.
The programme included a visit to Namibia’s Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Art and Culture, where representatives explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in higher education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship. The discussions focused on strengthening joint master’s and doctoral training, expanding research partnerships and identifying new mechanisms for translating academic knowledge into practical solutions.
The Finnish delegation also visited the Martti Ahtisaari Primary School in Windhoek, where they, together with their Namibian partners, reflected on the role of education, pedagogy and teacher development in shaping future generations. The visit highlighted the strong educational foundations that have underpinned Finnish-Namibian cooperation for decades. The delegation also visited the Finnish Southern Africa Cooperation Institute (FSAI).
The series of engagements culminated in a networking reception for Finnish university alumni in Namibia to celebrate the enduring collaboration between Finland and Namibia and to explore future avenues for cooperation. The reception was hosted by the Finnish universities together with the Embassy of Finland in Windhoek and the Team Finland Knowledge Network.
Jussi Pihlajamäki, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at UEF, reflected on how Finnish-Namibian relations have evolved and noted that while education remains at the heart of Finnish-Nambian relations, emerging areas of collaboration include digital technologies, human and environmental health and the responsible use of natural resources.
“Developing ecosystems that support innovations is required in both countries. In this, student and staff mobility between universities and companies plays a critical role in building trust, creating networks and generating new ideas,” he explained.
With over 100 Finnish university alumni in Namibia, a strong foundation for a new chapter of collaboration has been created and it serves as a powerful platform for knowledge exchange, skills development and innovation, creating benefits for both countries and their academic communities.
