The ABiCo project aims to develop innovative biobased biocomposite solutions to replace fossil-based primary raw materials and increase the use of recycled polymers and biobased raw materials in new demanding applications in accordance with the principles of the circular economy.
Companies are searching for more environmentally friendly alternatives to plastics and composites to meet consumer expectations and end-user needs. Biobased fibers, additives, and recycled polymers enable a significant reduction in emissions while also enhancing the competitiveness of businesses and creating opportunities for new business ventures.
With a budget exceeding €3.4 million, ABiCo is a co-innovation project funded by Business Finland. The research consortium includes Åbo Akademi, VTT, LUT University, LAB University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Eastern Finland. Within the consortium there are companies representing various industry sectors and end-use applications.
“At the University of Eastern Finland, we focus on novel biobased components as well as safety and health issues related to the new biocomposites,” Reijo Lappalainen, Professor, says.
