Professor Tarja Malm of the University of Eastern Finland has been awarded a grant of 300,000 euros for a research project aiming to identify novel biomarkers for ischemic stroke outcome. The funding was granted by the Academy of Finland from the EU’s ERA-NET NEURON 2019 Translational Biomarkers call aimed at supporting transnational research on brain disease biomarkers.
The project is designed to identify and validate novel biomarkers for long-term outcome after cerebral ischemia. The researchers will focus on neuron-derived extracellular vesicles, which have been shown to reflect neuronal health. In addition, certain genetic polymorphisms have previously been associated with stroke recovery. The present project will combine the analysis of neuron-derived extracellular vesicles with data on patient polymorphisms.
“This way, we can identify biomarker profiles that are able to predict recovery from ischemic stroke, making it possible to develop adequate patient care,” Malm says.
The project will be carried out at UEF’s A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences as part of the iBioStroke consortium involving other research groups from Romania, Spain, Germany and Poland.
