The operational and financial result of the University of Eastern Finland for 2025 continues to be good. The result of ordinary activities was almost as planned and the revenue and expenditure were in balance.
"UEF’s operational goals were achieved well, and the financial situation is stable. Thanks to all the staff and students, we have a very strong foundation for success also in the future," says Rector Tapio Määttä.
UEF awarded a record number of degrees in 2025. The number of completed degrees increased at all levels of education. The number of doctoral degrees, 206, was particularly significant, as this is clearly higher than in previous years.
The first full year of the national doctoral pilot was a success. A total of 70 doctoral researchers worked in the doctoral programmes included in the pilot.
The university has succeeded particularly well in calls for international competitive funding. The overall level of external funding increased, and other income was EUR 7.5 million higher than in the previous year.
Following increases in funding, the number of staff is also increasing. The number of person-years was 3,054, which is 142 more than in the previous year.
In 2025, UEF received the largest single donation in its history, when Martti Miettinen, a farmer, bequeathed more than EUR 3 million in his will to the development of research and education. LähiTapiola’s major donation of EUR 0.9 million to research in the field of education will strengthen a new research field examining the reasons for differences in learning among children and young people and developing ways to promote equality in learning and school well-being.
UEF’s operational activities are financed from investment income, for which reason the operating result may be planned so as to show a loss. UEF’s profit for the financial year amounted to 19.8 million euros, of which investment and financing activities accounted for 23.5 million euros. The return on investment activities was exceptionally high in 2025.
The financial statements for 2025 were discussed by the Board of the University of Eastern Finland on 19 March. The financial statements will be discussed by the University Collegium on 4 May.
