The University of Eastern Finland climbed to the top 500 universities in the world in the latest ranking published by Times Higher Education, THE.
The University of Eastern Finland improved its performance in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. The university was ranked in the 401–500 range, moving up from its previous placement in the 501–600 range. The ranking results were published on 9 October 2025.
“The University of Eastern Finland was particularly successful at improving its research quality, and our rise in the ranking is primarily due to higher citation impact and influence of scientific publications,” Rector Tapio Määttä says.
In terms of research quality, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked 419th globally, compared to its previous placement as 499th.
Out of the Finnish universities, also the University of Helsinki (ranked 105th) and Aalto University (ranked 195th) improved their performance in the THE ranking.
The University of Eastern Finland also climbed in the Academic Ranking of World Universities published in September by ShanghaiRanking, moving up to the 601–700 range from its previous placement in the 701–800 range.
“While university rankings should be approached critically in many respects, they do play a role in universities’ international collaboration as well as in the marketing of degree programmes taught in English. This is why the University of Eastern Finland’s improved performance across several rankings is important to us,” Määttä notes.
