As a result of its application round in October 2023, the Finnish Cultural Foundation has awarded grants totalling over 30 million euros to support science, the arts, and culture. The foundation is one of the largest grant-making foundations in Finland. The October application round marks the first time the foundation received over 10,000 applications. The applications are reviewed by a diverse group of over 150 experts in a range of scientific and artistic fields.
Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland were awarded a total of over 1.8 million euros in grants from the October application round. The largest individual grants were awarded to Sini Mikkola, Doctor of Theology, Soila Lemmetty, Doctor of Education, and Professor Olli Sippula.
Sini Mikkola and her team study norms, expectations, and ideals of manhood in a Lutheran context from the Reformation to the first decades of the 20th century. The grant awarded amounts to 242,000 euros and is one of the largest awarded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. Soila Lemmetty and her team were awarded a grant of 189,000 euros to study continuous learning at work. Olli Sippula and his team were awarded a grant of 199,000 euros to study the capture and utilisation of carbon dioxide emissions from industrial biomass combustion units.
