Zhejiang A&F University and University of Eastern Finland to launch an international study programme for Chinese PhD students

Zhejiang A&F University (ZAFU) in China and the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) have launched a groundbreaking international study programme, Boreal EcoQuest: Navigating Climate Impact on Northern Ecosystems.

The programme has brought together 20 dedicated PhD students from ZAFU to the UEF Joensuu Campus for a three-month immersive learning experience. Starting with the UEF Summer School in August, the students have engaged in a series of study modules focused on environmental change in forests, partly designed specifically for the PhD students. The topics have included ecosystem biodiversity and restoration. Emphasis has been given to photonics, forests and the bioeconomy, all of which are focus research areas of UEF.

The primary aim of the Boreal EcoQuest programme is to equip the students with the skills necessary for scientific writing, scientific thinking and forest research. Additionally, the programme seeks to enhance the students’ ability to operate in an English-speaking environment and to develop essential transversal skills such as research planning, group work, presentation skills, and effective interaction among peers.

“This collaborative initiative underscores the excellent relations between the two esteemed institutions and their strong willingness to cooperate. We have been extremely happy to have such a group of dedicated and hardworking students to study with us,” says Professor Frank Berninger of the UEF Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences. “Their presence enriches our academic community and helps in fostering a deeper understanding of global environmental challenges.”

The Boreal EcoQuest programme represents a significant step forward in international academic cooperation, highlighting the shared commitment of ZAFU and UEF in advancing knowledge and fostering global understanding in the face of climate change.
