Master's Degree Programme in Medical Physics is a multidisciplinary two-year master's degree programme that combines high-level research and teaching. The programme is designed for all nationalities, and a maximum of 15 students will be accepted into it.
In the programme, curriculum theory meets practice: The programme includes the possibility for a clinical internship at the Kuopio University Hospital, consisting of e.g. quality assurance measurements, training in radiation dosage planning for cancer treatment and getting familiar with the routine tasks of a medical physicist. The clinical internship can be replaced with a research internship at one of the high-class research groups at the Department of Technical Physics at the University of Eastern Finland.
The master’s programme will equip the student with specialist skills in the field of medical physics. In addition, the course of study will provide the expertise required to pursue a specialization as a medical physicist and can open pathways to further advanced studies and fellowship opportunities.
Upon completion of the programme, the graduate will have a career path tailored to his or her needs or interests, creating a possibility of:
- Continuing advanced studies to pursue a career as a scientist
- Becoming a valuable part of industry (e.g., in health technology and engineering)
- Working in management and teaching
- Acting in science administration at national level or internationally
- Continuing in pursuit of a career as a specialized medical physicist

Studies
The Master's Degree Programme in Medical Physics is a two-year programme. Students who have successfully completed the programme will be awarded with a master's degree in medical physics. During the two years you'll be spending with us, you'll get to know our excellent lecturers, professors, PhD students and other staff members, and you'll be spending a lot of time in our state-of-the-art learning environments. The group size at the lectures is typically around 20 students, which makes the lecture environment peaceful. Teaching is intensive and the student can be in direct contact with the lecturers.
The essential content of the degree programme in medical physics is designed to prepare and equip students for a career in the field of medical physics and technology. Typically, this includes the development of new instrumentation and technology, the development of new medical diagnostic protocols and therapeutic procedures, and improvement of existing technologies.
Some of our courses are held in alternate years.

How to apply?
The qualified applicant has an undergraduate degree (from at least a three-year bachelor’s programme or equivalent, equivalent to 180 ECTS credit units in Finnish university system) in science or engineering. The degree should entitle the applicant to apply to Master's studies in the country where the degree has been awarded. The degree work should have included sufficient preparatory studies in physics and mathematics. Additional studies in computer programming (especially in mathematical programming methods) and human biology are considered an asset.
If the applicant has not yet graduated, she/he can be selected on condition that she/he will be able to graduate and submit the officially certified copies of the degree certificate and final transcript of records or submit them according to country-specific document requirements by 11.8.2023, to the program coordinator.
Applicants must demonstrate excellent skills of English language. English language proficiency can be proven with official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency Test or Pearson Test of English (PTE) test score report.
Minimum requirements:
- TOEFL (iBT): 92
- IELTS (academic): 6.5 (overall)
- C1 Advanced Test: 180
- C2 Proficiency Test: 180
- PTE (academic): 62
The English language test is not required for applicants when:

Grading of applications
The admission process in the Master's Degree Programme in Medical Physics aims at fair selection of high-quality applicants. Student selection is based on the application documents and evaluation how the applicant’s skills and competences gained by the previous academic studies correspond to the Master´s studies applied. The success in earlier studies and the Motivation letter will be considered in the selection process. Meeting the minimum application requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the programme.
Applicants will be ranked according to the selection criteria. The best 15 applicants are accepted to the program and the rest of the applicants are rejected. Applicants are not placed on the waiting list.
The success of the applicant's studies will be graded using the following criteria:
1. Suitability and the content of the previous studies to the area of Medical Physics
2. Applicant's success in the previous studies
3. Prestige and level of the home university
4. Applicant's own explanations about his/her motivation to apply for studies
5. Other merits: relevant work experience, scientific merit, other degrees received, and international experience
Points are assigned for each of these five elements (0–5 each, 0=poor, 5=excellent), and those eligible applicants with the most points will be selected to progress further in the process.
Statements from the referees are used to complete the evaluation of point 4 (motivation of applicant), but they are not separately graded. An interview may be used in the final decisions on admission.
Based on the achieved points, maximum of 15 best students are selected.
