Kuopio University Hospital has received a testamentary donation of almost one million euros for research into eye diseases.
"The donation will enable an even stronger research investment into eye diseases which cause visual impairment. Age-related macular degeneration is currently the most significant disease," says Chief Physician, Professor Kai Kaarniranta.
According to Director Aarno Dietz, the donation is a testament to the good patient-oriented care received at the eye clinic and the overall visibility of KYS eye examinations and treatments.
KUH has been conducting internationally high-level research and clinical drug trials in eye diseases for decades. The most important research topic is age-related macular degeneration.
"We work closely with the University of Eastern Finland. Research problems are approached interdisciplinary with several cell models, animal models, and extensive patient data from genes to tissue analysis. Continuing and strengthening national and international research cooperation and postgraduate training play an important role," Kaarniranta emphasizes.
