The SENSOTRA project, funded by the European Research Council, has made its research materials public and accessible to all through an exciting new website. The Sensotra Tour includes 360-degree photos and videos, and a wide variety of sound clips since the 1960s from the European cities Turku, Ljubljana, and Brighton. You can join the Sensotra Tour at https://www.thinglink.com/scene/1364831714358067201.
SENSOTRA – Sensory Transformations and Transgenerational Environmental Relationships in Europe 1950–2020 – has collected data over the last four years and analysed the ways in which different generations relate to and experience their environment. The project is located in three different European cities: Turku, Ljubljana, and Brighton. The SENSOTRA researchers are also interested in knowing what roles technology and different technological devices play in people’s life and how they affect experiences.
The Sensotra Tour has been built to illustrate the fieldwork and data collection done by the project. The Sensotra Tour’s discussions are direct quotes from the sensobiographic interviews (walking interviews focused on sensory biographies) performed by voice actors. The material is pseudonymised, and the voices or images of the actual participants have not been used, so that they are not identifiable.
The Sensotra Tour site can be experienced on mobile devices, also with virtual glasses. The tour platform is built by Thinglink, originally developed by Finns, and it is very useful for the needs of such a project. The website has been compiled by SENSOTRA researcher Jari Ruotsalainen, PhD, with the help of the research team and other collaborators.
