The Philosophical Faculty educates professionals and experts, and carries out scientific research of a high standard, in the fields of educational sciences, modern languages and linguistics, cultural studies, home economics and craft science, as well as in psychology and theology. We have an explicitly defined national mission in certain fields of education, namely in Orthodox theology and in the Karelian language and culture. We are among the most significant providers of teacher education in Finland.
Our students have the most diverse opportunities in Finland to pursue a career as class teachers or subject teachers, or to specialise in early education, special education or career counselling – thanks to our extensive and research-based teacher education. Our teacher training schools are modern learning environments that also serve as active platforms for research and experimenting in the context of teaching and learning.
Interdisciplinary collaboration is an increasing focus for us. Our activities emphasise international collaboration and mutually beneficial partnerships through which we promote the impact and renewal of our research and education.

Research
Research carried out at the Philosophical Faculty is versatile and diverse; after all, our activities encompass the fields of educational sciences and psychology, home economics and craft science, modern languages, linguistics, cultural studies, and theology. Our research finds solutions to challenges related to diversifying learning and interaction, life course and human agency, and the encounters of languages and cultures in particular. We also offer a high standard of research training in these profile areas of the university. A particular focus in our current research is on tomorrow’s learning environments, digitalisation, and sensory environments. Our research yields novel interdisciplinary solutions for the needs of digitising societies, cultural encounters, training to promote lifelong learning, and the changing world of work. The faculty’s research is increasingly carried out within research groups, national and international networks, and collaborative projects.

We offer our graduates a diverse set of skills and the ability to rely on latest research in their work, as well as a solid foundation for postgraduate education. We educate experts for our digitising society in the fields of the human sciences. We offer degree programmes in educational sciences, career counselling and teacher education, psychology and theology, as well as in foreign languages and translation studies, Finnish language, and cultural studies.
We offer diverse teacher education, collaborating closely with the university’s other academic subjects and our teacher training schools. We are the only provider of education in Finland in Orthodox theology and the Karelian language and culture, in which the university has been given a special national mission. Our extensive selection of minor subjects allows you to compose a degree that is meaningful to you and makes use of your own interests and strengths.
We also offer a range of interesting Bachelor's and Master’s degree programmes taught in English in the fields of educational sciences, English language and culture, and linguistics. In the context of continuous learning, we serve the needs of the changing world of work by offering separate qualification modules in educational sciences and career counselling.
